The Altadena Chamber of Commerce & Civic Association Sets Centennial Celebration
Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year Named

Altadena, CA (December 20, 2023) – The Altadena Chamber of Commerce & Civic Association will mark one hundred years of serving Altadena with a Centennial Celebration. This very special occasion will also honor Doug Colliflower as Citizen of the Year and El Patron as Business of the Year for 2023. The Celebration and Awards Banquet will be held at 6:30pm on February 2, 2024 at the Altadena Town & Country Club in Altadena. “It’s going to be a wonderful event. We are so excited to be celebrating one hundred years of the Altadena Chamber,” said Altadena Chamber President Judy Matthews.

Citizen of the Year recipient, Doug Colliflower, is a long-time resident of Altadena who has been active in the community for more than thirty five years. A realtor who specializes in the real estate needs of senior citizens, Mr. Colliflower is well known to many in Altadena. He is a Director and Immediate Past President of the Rotary Club of Altadena, serves on the Altadena Town Council, is a two time President of the Altadena Chamber of Commerce, and is a Director for Pasadena Village.

A restaurant known for quality cuisine and community involvement, El Patron was selected as Business of the Year. Owner, Margaret Cortez, known to all as Maggie, served countless meals to those in need during the Pandemic. She continues to feed her community by sponsoring numerous local events, supporting local schools, and, most importantly, providing a welcoming dining establishment that fills hearts as well as stomachs.

Incorporated in 1924, The Altadena Chamber of Commerce & Civic Association was formed to promote the commercial, industrial, civic and general interests of the Altadena community and its trade area. Membership is open to any person, association, corporation, partnership, estate or other business entity sharing the goals and objectives of the Chamber for the betterment of the entire community of Altadena.

Citizen of the Year

History of the Award:
The first Outstanding Citizen Award was given by the Altadena Chamber of Commerce in honor of the late Mr. W.B. Taylor, veteran newspaper reporter for the Pasadena Star News. Since 1945, the award has been given annually in recognition of faithful, untiring interest and service in community activities.

Criteria and committee guidelines:

Adopted by the Altadena Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors November 7, 2006

  • Citizen of the Year candidate must be a resident of Altadena.
  • Has contributed substantially to the betterment of the community through the years and been involved in the community through volunteer efforts.
  • Is of good character.
  • Individuals who are employed in a public service position in Altadena (i.e. Clergy, Law Enforcement, Public Relations, Politics, etc) must demonstrate community involvement above and beyond the scope of their paid position.
  • Individuals serving on the Altadena Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors are ineligible
  • Recipient must be available to attend the Installation & Awards Dinner in early 2024.

The Committee: Immediate past Citizen of the Year and a representative from each of the following organizations: Altadena Chamber of Commerce, Altadena Heritage, Altadena Historical Society, Altadena Foothills Conservancy, Altadena Branch of NAACP, Altadena Sheriff Support Group, Quality of Life Center and Altadena Town Council. The committee chair shall be appointed by the Altadena Chamber of Commerce President and the chair must be a Chamber Director.

Business of the Year

Business/Organization
– Has contributed substantially to the betterment of the business community through volunteer efforts. – Promotes other businesses in Altadena along with their own.
– Member of the Altadena Chamber in good standing.
– Businesses associated with Altadena Chamber Board members are not eligible.
– Business owner must be available to attend the Installation & Awards Dinner in early 2024.
