Our History
PFCU was founded in September 1935 by a small group of City of Pasadena employees who wanted a safe, fair place to save and borrow money. Our first “office” was a window in the City Treasurer’s office. In 1980, the Credit Union moved from the tower of Pasadena City Hall to our present location on South Fair Oaks Avenue where we pioneered the redevelopment of the area. Six employees settled into our 5,000 square foot office. By 1985, plans had begun for the expansion to the present building, which was completed in December 1990 and increased the office space to 20,000 square feet.
For many years, our field of membership was limited to City of Pasadena employees and their families. In order to provide members with additional services such as checking, VISA cards, and ATM cards, we needed to expand our membership so we began to look for ways to grow. The Cities of South Pasadena, San Gabriel and Sierra Madre as well as more than one hundred companies, non-profits and smaller credit unions joined in to make us the safe and secure financial institution of choice for thousands of members we are today. We’re honored to have been named “Best Bank/Credit Union in the SGV” by the readers of the Pasadena Star News, San Gabriel Valley Tribune, Whittier Daily News SEVEN years in a row, 2011-2017, and eleven other SGV newspapers in 2015-17. We are the 2014 Pasadena Chamber of Commerce Small Business Corporate Citizen of the Year. Bauer Financial rates all banks and credit unions on their website, www.bauerfinancial.com and has given us their highest rating of five stars each quarter for many years.
Our field of membership now includes a wide range of proud members, including engineers, artists, police officers, firefighters, construction workers, teachers, civic leaders, business owners, volunteers and full-time Moms or Dads. Our diversity is reflected in our Board of Directors. Family members or those living in our members’ households are also eligible. PFCU is a pillar in our community and the place to go for loans, savings, and financial literacy.
