Once again, the Altadena Chamber of Commerce invites the community to submit nominations for both the Citizen & Business of the Year! It has been a challenging year for our community. Despite the hardships we have all faced, many of our Chamber members and individuals throughout the community have not only stayed afloat, but helped others from sinking.
We look to you – our community – for your nominations of these upstanding neighbors, so that we may shine a light on their generous works and hopefully inspire others to action.
History of the COY/BOY Award
The first Outstanding Citizen Award was given by the Altadena Chamber of Commerce in honor of the late Mr. W.B. Taylor, veteran newspaper reporter for the Pasadena Star News. Since 1945, the award has been given annually in recognition of faithful, untiring interest and service in community activities.
Considerations for Nominating the Citizen of the Year
Citizen of the Year award recipients are those individuals that stand out amongst the many dedicated volunteers that work hard to support the community. Last year’s recipient of the Altadena Chamber of Commerce’s Citizen of the Year award was Veronica Jones – a well-known neighborhood activist, lifetime Altadena resident, and current member of the Altadena Town Council.
Accordingly, a COY award recipient must meet at least the following criteria: Must be a resident of Altadena and has contributed substantially to the betterment of the community through the years and has been involved in the community through volunteer efforts. Is of good character. Individuals who are employed in a public service position in Altadena (i.e. Clergy, Law Enforcement, Public Relations, Politics, etc) must demonstrate community involvement above and beyond the scope of their paid position.
Finally, individuals currently serving on the Altadena Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors are ineligible for the award.
Considerations for Nominating the Business of the Year
Like the Citizen of the Year, Business of the Year award recipients are those businesses that stand out amongst the many in Altadena that strive to support their local community. Last year’s recipient of the Altadena Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Year award was Grocery Outlet Bargain Market. In the short time after their opening, they’ve made a positive impact in Altadena since their opening. They’ve sponsored numerous community events, cross-promoted many local groups, and donated food to local causes.
Therefore, a BOY award recipient should meet at least the following criteria: Has contributed substantially to the betterment of the business community through volunteer efforts. Promotes other businesses in Altadena along with their own. Member of the Altadena Chamber of Commerce in good standing.
As with ACOC directors’ logical exclusion from the Citizen of the Year Award, businesses associated with Altadena Chamber of Commerce Board members are not eligible.
